The Visitor Program

From the earliest stages of conceptual design of the scientific program for Janelia Farm, we planned that visiting scientists would play a major role. Quoting from the original proposal for the establishment of Janelia Farm submitted to the HHMI Trustees in August 2000: "We envision that this site could serve another important and truly unique role in advancing biomedical research. There is currently no well-equipped laboratory facility in the world where a group of scientists can come to work together, each bringing a few members of their research group, for periods ranging from a few weeks to a year. No university or research institution is likely to dedicate the required laboratory space for an activity that does not principally benefit its own faculty or teaching mission. In contrast, HHMI with its investigators distributed in 70 locations has a need for a site where these investigators can come together to work, rather than simply confer."

TYPES OF VISITORS

• Individuals, perhaps with one or two members of their research team, whose salaries may or may not be provided by HHMI. These visitors are normally closely allied with the laboratory of an individual group leader or are part of a collaborative effort between a small number of group leaders. In general, their work is in collaboration with a Janelia Farm lab head.
  
  
• Project teams (groups of external scientists) who aim to work together at Janelia Farm on a project of their own design. In general, such project teams may be provided with a small number of Janelia-funded staff and full access to our shared resource labs. Preference is given to projects that were clearly allied to the overall mission of Janelia Farm and/or the ongoing work of a lab head.

In addition to these long-term visitors, we also accommodate short-term visitors of two types:

* HHMI investigators, members of their laboratories, HHMI international scholars, and other members of the scientific community (as capacity allows) who may come to Janelia Farm for periods of a few days to a few weeks to make use of specific equipment or facilities not available to them at their home institution.

* Scientists who may come for a week or two to interact informally with our research community.

Visitors are expected to participate fully in the ongoing intellectual life of the campus. For both individual visitors and project teams, a variety of time-sharing arrangements is possible for example: a full-time sabbatical by the visiting scientist; or an arrangement in which the visiting scientist spends one week a month at Janelia Farm, but has a person or two in residence full-time. The visitor or project team should propose a specific arrangement as part of the proposal. Arrangements extending beyond a year are reviewed on an annual basis.

Available resources may include: laboratory and office space (for the visiting scientist while in residence); access to shared resource (core) labs; funds for supplies and travel to and from Janelia Farm; residential housing, and salary funds for the visitor or for dedicated staff.
